May 1999
As the school year ends, high school spring sports finals fill the schedules. The best thing about covering these final days of school sports for the year it that all of the competitors are at the top of their field. The reason they are competing is because they are the best in their classification. This can lead to some rather outstanding images.

Above: Bay City long jumper Chandi Jones lands in the sand pit while competing in the Class 4A long jump Friday May 14, 1999 at the UIL State Track and Field Meet. Jones, a junior, won the long jump and triple jump titles for a third straight year.

Left: Eric Eshbach of Orangefield, Texas looks back up at the pole vault bar as he falls to the mat below. Eshbach cleared 18 feet 2.25 inches to set an alltime, all-competition prep pole vault record.

Double coverage on second base leads to a safe steal from first.

As always, one team doesn't win. Emotions run high and low at sporting events. This young lady played for a softball team in the Texas high school final softball tournament. They lost in the first round.
